「エコロジーの視点からみた異文化コミュニケーション」

Abstract:
In the multilingual, multicultural environments in which intercultural communication takes place nowadays, the traditional dichotomies "us" vs. "them", "native" vs. "non-native" lose their explanatory power. It makes sense to turn to non-linear, historically and culturally contingent models of meaning making that account for the significance of utterances, actions, and events. Ecological theories of language learning and language use can better capture the relationality of self and other and the "layered simultaneities"
(Blommaert, 2005) of discourse on multiple timescales that we observe in intercultural encounters. A conversation at a Thanksgiving dinner between a Russian, a German and two Japanese speakers in the U.S.
(Uryu, forthcoming) will serve to explore what language ecology can contribute to the study of intercultural communication.
